'High-risk population': Scary parole stats for New York's worst sex offenders

ALBANY - Nearly 60% of the most violent sex offenders released into the community found themselves back in trouble with the law, state figures show.
A full 54 of the 93 convicted sex offenders let go under strict monitoring violated their parole - most of them within the first six months.
Many were nailed by their parole officers for sexually related conduct, ranging from rape to admitting to fantasizing about kids to possessing Viagra . And some were busted for using social networking websites.
"This is inherently a high-risk population," said state Criminal Justice Services Division spokesman John Caher .
Under the state's 2007 civil confinement law, a judge can lock up dangerous sex offenders past their prison time - or release them under "strict and intensive supervision and treatment."
The sex offenders falling under the civil confinement provisions were found by a jury or judge to suffer from a mental abnormality - or agreed voluntarily to submit to more stringent monitoring.
