What methods do spammers resort to?

Dec 19, 2006 by Cale | Posted in Other - Internet

What is the most creative method you have seen?

They seem to be targetting Y!A at the moment (ok I am quite new on here so may have been an ongoing thing). Other quite creative ones are adverts embedded in song downloads from Limewire. And does anybody else get that 'replica rolex', 'monday market report' and 'herbal viagra' rubbish??!

What makes me laugh tho, is does anybody every buy from these scams? I mean, hey, a stranger passes you on the street and says 'Hey, give me a tenner for these pills' do people buy them? Ok, possibly at 3am in brixton, yeah, but you get my point!

Apparently they put out such a high volume of messages that it only takes a very low percentage of replies for the operation to become profitable.

What a mad way to make money! Any comments?

Several sources of spam, Addresses generated by a random generator must hit on some real addresses; Lists of live addresses traded for cash, and worms that invade your computer and search out all your contacts. The current trend is to put the spam message in a graphic, which makes it harder for spam filters to pick it up. Phishing emails usually use this. Note That's why Yahoo mail has a block images option.

Yeah, those spam emails are weird.
I'm not quite at the point in my life that I would consider buying prescription medicine off of somebody who cant even spell 'Viagra' properly!

complex computer situation...?

Nov 03, 2010 by Joe Kravets | Posted in Other - Computers

okay it all began when i downloaded Limewire, i was stupid enough to try and download COD which led to my computer getting a massive virus( i bought it later for my xbox). my computer wouldn't let me open the browser, it would reroute me to other sites like viagra or porn. so i started looking for virus protection and removal, all the Legit sites ( like AVG ) i went to wouldn't open ( i'm guessing because of the virus ) and a pop up kept opening advertising virus protection, which scanned my computer and showed me all the virus's that i had ( trojan? ) and said if i bought the protection
( $120?!?!?!?) it would remove them. so i looked for a few other virus protection programs, found xoftspy ware and something...zilla(forgot what its called) anyway i downloaded both and scanned my computer with the xoftspyware which found nothing, the other one finished downloading and said i had to reboot computer for it to work, i tried it and now my computer freezes at the windows loading screen in the beginning of start up. Now i really dont care about fixing my computer or restoring it, i want 2 answers:

1. how to easily fix everything and make me happy again with the cost of money or pro assist!
2. completely erase everything and start fresh ( how do i do that )

P.S. i just realized i could have done system restore.... mother $*&^
i dont have a manual for it and how would i put those programs on my computer? and what makes the difference between say... linuxs and widows?
i now have new problems, the computer started up normally and it doesnt have the virus popping up anymore (good!) but now most programs dont work, i created a new user and now the old one vanished and when i try to do system restore, it says it has been turned off by group policy and i need to contact my administrater domain!?!?!?

BTW when i try to go to a AV website it says the browser cant find it even if i click on links.

Yep. These sorts of viruses are difficult to remove. Your one now controls your Internet access and will do its best not to let you download another AV program.

You now need to avoid logging onto the computer with your usual logon.

While it's hard to tell which virus you have from your description, your description of it popping up to offer you protection for a load of money reminded me of another virus that I battled with for one of my customers. I wrote about it and I'll provide you the link shortly in case you might find it useful.

But firstly, some things to try:

1. If you have a different login, such as an administrator login, use that to gain access to your computer. Your virus is all tied up with your present login and profile, so if you went in as another login, you are in with a fighting chance - an AV program would be able to run properly.

But if not, try the next idea - although I'm not sure if safe mode will let you run AVG. But worth a try.

1. Get a copy of AVG onto CD. You'll need to use another computer for this. Use this link and go for the 32bit version.

http://free.avg.com/gb-en/download.prd-a fh

2. Back on your computer, get into Safe Mode. Turn on your computer and then pretty much as soon as you see the computer booting into Windows, press the F8 key repeatedly. You might need a couple of go's at doing this before you can get in and choose Safe Mode.

3. Insert your newly burnt CD with AVG on it and see if you can run it in Safe Mode.

If that didn't work, then this is how I defeated my particular virus:

It may be that a similar process will work for you. The first steps involve wrestling enough control from the computer, so that we could create another user and then login as that user and run the AV.

So, that's how you can FIX everything ;-)

My instructions are written with a Tech in mind. Have a read, see what you think. And if necessary, grab a tech and some coffee.

Oh, and if you wanted to just start again, you'd need your Windows install disks, the licence key. You probably wouldn't need to format the disk (the Windows install gives you that option). That way, your data - documents and photos and the like will still be there. But your applications and programs would be lost to you even though the files are still there. They'd need reinstalling. Oh, and if you didn't reformat, then you'll need to run an AV scan to pick up the remains of the virus...

Phew. Hope that helps.

Rob

Mark Gorton, founder of Lime Wire and the LimeWire filesharing software has been named as being personally liable in a recent decision of the New York Courts. U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood wrote in her decision that Gorton was liable for enticing users to commit copyright infringements. Apparently the LimeWire software made it particularly easy – and very obviously so – to download digital music. Other software enables the downloading of copyrighted software – think of the many versions of Ares , for example – but perhaps none have the brazen obviousness that is inherent in the LimeWire client.

The party who filed the case is the RIAA – the Recording Industry Artists of America – who are no strangers to large high profile court battles. They are, however, a stranger to winning any of their battles, and this decision might mark a change in direction by the courts. Apparently LimeWire's long list of traditional defenses for the charge at hand were ignored. It is unclear whether this is one Judge's personal opinion, or if this is generally indicative of a sweeping change of Philosophy.

One thing that is clear is that in targeting Gorton personally this decision is sure to make budding entrepreneurs think twice about developing any new technology that might infringe on the intellectual property of the entertainment sector. We will follow this story, so watch this space.
