Using innovation as a “survival strategy” in environmental ...
Three years ago KQED , a Northern California public radio organization, only produced a radio show. Now, as senior editor Craig Miller explained, KQED is using all forms of media to engage its audience—online text articles, interactive maps, slideshows, videos and podcasts.
“Innovation is a survival strategy,” said Miller, who seems to be surviving pretty well.
This fall he and Gretchen Weber, a multimedia producer at KQED, received the EJ Innovator of the Year award from MSU’s Knight Center for Environmental Journalism. The award is given for projects changing the way environmental information and news is communicated.
“Developing innovative techniques for reaching the public with one of the world's most important and most challenging stories is a big part of what we do at the Knight Center,” said Dave Poulson, executive director for the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism and editor of Great Lakes Echo , a newswire on the Great Lakes watershed run by MSU graduate students and professional journalists.
“Students here experiment with new story-telling techniques on GreatLakesEcho.org and with other venues such as documentary and magazine production. So it is important for the center to recognize the innovative work occurring elsewhere.”
