Pfizer spends $4.2 million lobbying federal government in 3rd-quarter

NEW YORK (AP) - Pfizer Inc., the world's biggest drugmaker, spent just under $4.2 million lobbying Congress and federal agencies in the third quarter, focusing on a range of pharmaceutical and health care industry issues, according to a recent filing.
The company makes blockbuster products, including the cholesterol drug Lipitor and impotence pill Viagra. During the third quarter, it reduced spending by 23 percent from about $5.4 million during the same period a year prior, when the industry had a heavy focus on health care reform proposals. But, spending is up 84 percent from just under $2.3 million during the second quarter of this year.
International trade agreements that could benefit the company in important markets, including South Korea, remained key topics in the company's lobbying efforts, along with intellectual property rights and market access.
Meanwhile, Pfizer continued lobbying on issues related to the health care reform law passed in March and changes to the regulatory system for biosimilars, or copies of lucrative biotechnology drugs.
